Social Media Must Be Used

The video below explains why social media is a “must use” in education.  Whether for developing a teacher’s professional learning network or to provide an audience for a student’s work, the options are endless.  What is clear is that we are merely scratching the surface.

    Hi Mary Lou.
You’re right,he was an entertaining speaker. I am also excited about using social media to enhance the classroom. Over the past year I have had many new introductions to the endless possibilities for use of technology to enhance the learning process as well as improve our own skills as educators.
One of the most unique benefits to this technology, in my opinion, is showing our students that they are citizens of the world. Allowing them to see beyond their own school, town, state, and lives, and showing them what education is like around the world. If you think about your own experiences in school learning about History or Geography, everything we learned was from a text. Students today have the ability to see what they are learning, intereact with other cultures, and even communicate personally via digital media. Today’s students have many opportunities for truly authentic learning. Teachers just need to facilitate such experiences.

Absolutely, wholeheartedly agree with George Couros. What an entertaining speaker. That is the conversation I was having with my friend yesterday. I was telling her about the Twitter blog posting on this site, a few weeks ago. We both agree even families connect differently. We sit in our living rooms and we are “connected and together” sitting around with our different gadgets. We talk as we share what we discover in the “social media.” There’s no question the younger students of today, learn better when using social media. They are more engaged when they use those tools, it is “authentic” to them and we can make it “meaningful” as well which is a must to promote learning. Neophyte was a good term to describe how I see myself in terms of social media: a novice but will keep trying to use in my teaching. I was converted a long time ago…. right now is about: “just do it”!!!
