Empathic Educators: Walk the Talk

26 May

There was quite a bit of interest in my recent post about Lincoln High School. Below you can find a video describing another facet of the school, the Health Center. They are truly caring for and keeping the whole child in mind.

WOW. The Lincoln Center is definitely doing very important work helping these young people rebuild their lives. One of my favorite movies is Freedom Writers based on a true story of a teacher helping her students make sense of their lives and achieve academically. Stress changes children’s brain chemistry and precludes them from learning. Sick or addicted parents, navigating our culture with limited English language skills, economic problems, etc. all act as stressors for our young students. Love, compassion and understanding are critical to help them cope with stress. We also need to teach the necessary adaptive skills to overcome adversity and be resilient. Thank you for sharing this video, Drew.
